It is with deep sorrow that we share the sad news that Commissioner Mattax passed away Thursday, April 13. The Commissioner was diagnosed with lung cancer late last year. TDI reported that he was very grateful for the messages he received from so many employees offering prayers and support, and he never missed an opportunity to tell people how proud he was of the work done at the agency. Governor Greg Abbott released the following statement:
“Today Cecilia and I mourn the loss of a friend, colleague, and distinguished public servant. Commissioner David Mattax truly dedicated his life and career to the State of Texas. A brilliant lawyer whose loyalty to Texas never wavered, David was a doting son and brother who took great pride in mentoring young lawyers who would become the leaders of tomorrow. David’s brilliance, wit, and wisdom will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Cecilia and I extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to the Mattax family.”
Mr. Mattax will lie in state from 12:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, April 20th and 21st at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home, 3125 North Lamar Boulevard.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, April 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at University United Methodist Church, 2409 Guadalupe Boulevard. Interment will follow the service at the Texas State Cemetery.
