The Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) Education Foundation recently awarded a total of $34,500 in academic scholarships to 31 students at five Texas universities. The students attend the University of Houston Main campus, the University of Houston Downtown the University of Texas at San Antonio, the University of Texas at Dallas and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
ICT began the program in 2002 as a way to help encourage more students to consider a career in the property and casualty industry, and develop the next generation of insurance professionals. The Education Foundation has awarded more than $970,000 to twelve Texas universities and 460 insurance and risk management students since 2002.
Tony Gonzalez, president of the Education Foundation, said this year’s ICT scholarship recipients come from all walks of life and all over the world, but they all have one thing in common. “Every one of our ICT scholarship recipients has discovered that an insurance career offers a great opportunity for a good salary and a stable future,” said Gonzalez. “Many of these students have traveled a long way to enhance their education in Texas and we are doing our best to ensure that they have made the right choice in seeking a career in the property and casualty insurance industry.”
Each student also received an invitation to attend ICT’s annual Mid-Year Symposium in Austin, July 12-13, where insurance industry leaders gather to learn about issues affecting the Texas marketplace. Each year, 100 percent of the Mid-Year Symposium sponsorships, company and individual donations go toward the ICT scholarships and school funding.
Many of these students will graduate later this year and will be looking for full-time positions within the P&C industry. In an ongoing effort, the ICT Education Foundation tries to assist their scholarship recipients in finding jobs in the insurance marketplace. For the past five years ICT has provided the students resumes/statements to any ICT member company requesting them. With your help, 56 percent of ICT scholarship graduating recipients have found employment in the property and casualty industry in the past year.
If your agency is in the process of hiring new applicants, please consider taking a look at these students by e-mailing Mark Hanna. ICT will forward you their resume and ICT statement for your review.
