Earlier today, Speaker Joe Straus announced that he will not be running for re-election to the Texas House of Representatives at the end of his term, and therefore, will not return as Speaker of the House.
In a statement announcing his decision, Straus said, “It’s been decades since someone has left the Speaker’s office on his own terms. But we have accomplished what I hoped the House would accomplish when I first entered this office, and I am increasingly eager to contribute to our state in new and different ways.” Straus, a San Antonio Republican, has been Speaker of the Texas House since January 2009.
“IIAT has enjoyed a close working relationship with Speaker Straus over the years and we sincerely appreciate his service to our state. We will miss working with Joe and look forward to continuing a strong relationship with whoever ascends him as Speaker,” said IIAT Governmental Affairs Director Lee Loftis.
Early bid announcements include: Chairman Phil King of Weatherford and Chairman John Zerwas of Richmond.
